Brexit Will Not Affect EU Trademarks for Now

The Brexit referendum yesterday in the UK to leave the EU is the start of a process that is expected to take months, if not years.  For trademark owners with EU trademark registrations, it may eventually mean that separate protection will be needed in the UK.  For the time being, however, those registered rights remain fully protected.  It is too soon to predict what will happen, but we expect that the UK and EU will implement transitional provisions to ensure a secure transition.

OWE is monitoring these developments with input from expert local counsel in both the UK and EU.  We will continue to keep you updated on any new developments.  If you have any questions, please contact your regular trademark attorney at OWE.
