Noel Cook Celebrates His 25th Anniversary at OWE

In a recent Daily Journal profile of the firm, OWE principal Noel Cook talked about how he came to the firm. “’It’s a classic networking story. I was in Chicago for a wedding and told the guy who was getting married that I was looking to get into copyright and trademark,’ Cook said. The groom referred Cook to a fellow Kenyon College alum whose immediate response was, ‘If you want to practice trademark and copyright in San Francisco you’ve got to go talk to Owen Wickersham—that’s the best firm in San Francisco.’”

Noel joined OWE as an associate in 1989 and his career took off from there. Noel practices in the areas of trademark, copyright and trade secret law, with an emphasis on litigation.

He has worked with clients in a variety of fields, including product and furniture design, character merchandising, software, Internet, the outdoor and retail industries, and insurance coverage. His clients have included well-known brands like Sanrio, Design Within Reach, Pablo Designs, The Sherwin-Williams Company, Williams-Sonoma, Yakima Products, Eagle Creek, and salesforce.com, among many others.

Noel is an immediate-past Executive Committee member of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. and past Chair of the Northern California Chapter. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the IP Advisory Council at the University of Akron Law School.  He has been a long-time committee member, past subcommittee chair and speaker for both the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the ABA IP Law Section, and is a member of the INTA Trademark Mediators Network.

“Aside from the quality of the lawyers and legal work, one of the first things I noticed about OWE was how friendly the people were,” says Noel. “25 years later I still feel the same – the firm has a relaxed and supportive environment that allows attorneys and staff at all levels the opportunity to excel. It’s a great place to work.”

Outside of work, Noel plays tennis, spends time with his wife and young children—and has enjoyed the SF Giants’ incredible run of titles.
