Townsend Comments to LAW.COM About Meta Trademark Fight

OWE’s Larry Townsend provided background and commentary to LAW.COM’s Scott Graham in an article about the trademark suit filed by METAx against Meta Platforms Inc. (formerly known as Facebook.)

Townsend opines that there could be merit in Meta Platforms’ argument that the two companies’ businesses don’t overlap to the point of trademark infringement.  On the possibility that Meta Platforms’ defense will attack the weakness of the “meta” mark held by METAx, he notes, “No one likes to say their own mark is weak.  You almost have to argue that Meta is a common term, and everybody’s entitled to use it, especially when it’s combined with something like Platforms.”  Townsend goes on to say, “It’s a big one.  Everyone wants to know what Meta Platforms is going to get into next.”
